Being a part of a student’s life is a privilege. The adolescent journey is filled with emotional, spiritual, and physical growth as well as laughter, insecurities, varying degrees of confidence, time with friends, and openness to shaping their worldview. The church needs to be a part of that journey. It is to be a place of acceptance and community. A student’s identity and worldview should be challenged to be more like Christ through Bible study and missions. Effective student ministry rooted in the church should help students to grasp and understand faith as both something they own for themselves and something to be shared with others. Jamie loves that his calling is to minister to and journey with students and their families through adolescence.
Jamie came as the Minister to Students in February 2007. Previous to this move, he served in ministry positions at First Baptist Church in Fort Payne, Alabama (2001-2007); Northwoods Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia (1997-2001); and the Baptist Campus Ministry in New London, Connecticut (1994-1997).
Jamie is from Centre, Alabama, where he grew up and lived through high school graduation. He earned degrees from Jacksonville State University and McAfee School of Theology, Mercer University. Jamie was ordained in 1995 at Tates Chapel Baptist Church, Centre, Alabama.
While in Connecticut, Jamie met Hope Prather. She was serving as a missionary in an urban church nearby. After a season of dating, they separated and took what they define as “a five year sabbatical” in their relationship. Hope attended seminary at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, and Jamie went to Atlanta to attend McAfee. In 2002 Hope and Jamie reunited. They were married on November 29, 2003. They have a black lab named Anna Belle.
Jamie enjoys hanging out with friends and family for any occasion. You will most likely find him at a coffee shop, around a table with good food, or in front of a TV for a ballgame or a good movie. When possible, he likes to play golf or racquetball and to dig in the dirt around the yard.
