August 3 - November 9

We were a young family with three small children, ages 7, 3 and 2, new to Huntsville, having arrived five days before Christmas in 1986. I understood at the time the Tree was also relatively new , starting two years earlier in 1984. So, my children have grown up with the Tree and through the years it has become a treasured Christmas tradition in our family.
Christian music, especially gospel quartet music and the old hymns, were a prevalent part of my childhood. My Dad even wrote a song that was published in the James D. Vaughn songbook. However, growing up in small churches, where the choir was comprised of people who could only make a joyful noise, I was so impressed with the talent and music program at FBC and thrilled when I learned about the Tree.
I had heard about Living Christmas Trees in other churches, but I had never seen one. In 1987, my family experienced the Tree for the first time, and I, like everyone around me, let out a sigh when the lights came on. I still love to hear that sound from people who are experiencing the tree for the first time! I look forward to the Tree every year, and we make our holiday plans around it, as it is the favorite of our many Christmas traditions. We have brought family, friends, and neighbors over the years, and I have been known to make more than one appearance in a given year!
First Baptist has been truly blessed through the years by literally hundreds who have contributed to the many tasks associated with the Tree production. It is a tremendous commitment with much preparation and countless hours of rehearsal. It is a special gift to our church, community and surrounding areas. I learned this when my aunt and uncle from Lawrenceburg, TN found out that I attend First Baptist and responded, “Oh, you go to the church that has the Living Christmas Tree. We see it every year”.
Billy, thank you for your dedication to FBC. The music ministry has flourished under your talented guidance. When choir members tell me they feel like they’ve had worship service during rehearsals, that speaks volumes about your spiritual leadership. You have a heart for Christ and are always giving God the glory and honor.
Reflect now on how the Tree takes us out of the busyness of the season to focus on the manger and the Cross. It reminds us of why we have forgiveness, joy, hope, peace and contentment. It is because of the greatest gift of all, Jesus our Lord and Savior. It still gives me goose bumps! And one day, every knee will bow, every tongue confess that he is Lord of Lords and King of Kings. Until then, my heart will go on singing the praises of my Lord. Praise His Holy name!
Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord; let us shout aloud to the
Rock of our salvation. Psalm 95:1
