The Special Education Class is designed for adults with mental retardation and/or physical disabilities. The age range of class members is 18 years and older. Many members of the class are employed in sheltered workshop settings at The Opportunity Center. Some have jobs in the community. Most members live in a group home context; however, some live at home with their families.
The main goal of this class is to provide spiritual nurture and Christian fellowship to the class members. The director and teachers also serve as a source of support and encouragement to the families of the class members. Finally, the leaders of the class advocate for ministry with adults with mental retardation and physical disabilities, in our church, in other churches, and in the community.
Each week, members of the class gather after the Sunday School hour to watch the television broadcast of our morning worship service.
In late summer or early fall, the class participates in a Special Education Vacation Bible School. This school attracts a number of persons from the community who do not regularly participate in the Sunday School class. Look for more information about this event in our church newsletter or in publicity offered through The Opportunity Center.
